World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Fabiano Caruana of the United States in Game 12 of the 2018 World Chess Championship match that is being held in London. It’s a best of 12 games where the first player to earn 6.5 points earns the lion’s share of a $1.14 million prize pool, and the title of «World Chess Champion». Both players entered game 12 tied with 5.5 points each. For a 3rd time in the match, we have a Sicilian Defense, Sveshnikov variation. Unlike game 10 of this match however, Carlsen is the one to deviate first with his 8th move, Ne7. The position of Carlsen’s knight primarily impacts not only Caruana’s kingside, but also his king’s address. Just as we witnessed in game 1, we experience in this game 12 a case of opposite sides castling. Whose king would be the more vulnerable? Win game 12, and you become World Chess Champion!
