LYRICS to SOMETHING NEW

You’ve never seen the likes of this one, baby.
It’s called the Green New Deal.
Nothing like you will read online, darlin’,
So let me do the reveal.
It’s Zero emissions by 2030.
The Green New Deal is comin’ to you.

Job guarantees, you know it’s true,
with fairer wages’, those are for you.
An education, without the debt.
Universal healthcare, we’ll get there yet.
Instead of buying war and funding corporations,
We’re kicking’ out the old school,
this’ll be our something new.
This’ll be our something new.

It ain’t a partisan issue,
80 percent agree.
Congress needs a little “Hey Baby.”
That is up to you and me.
Clean up the environment, clean up the elections.
It’s the future, I’m talkin’ to you.

You know you want it, you know it’s true.
Deterioration ain’t good for you.
The greenhouse gases have got to go.
Ain’t got the time now to take it slow.
You can see the warnings everywhere around you.
We’re kicking’ out the old school,
this’ll be our something new.
This’ll be our something new.

It’s social justice we’re after,
not insulating opulence.
That’s gone on way too long, baby.
We must change all that at once.
You’re the greatest resource we’ve got it is true.
You’re the future, I’m talkin’ to you.

You know you want it, you know it’s true.
The Green New Deal is moving you.
We don’t want war or corporate welfare.
We’ve got solutions. Let’s get ‘em in there.
Got to implement this, got to push it through.
That’s the Green New Deal and it’s what we’re gonna do.
Kicking out the old school,
This’ll be our something new.
This’ll be our something new.
This’ll be our something new.

ABOUT THE SOURCE MATERIAL

«Soul Bossa Nova»
Song by Quincy Jones
from the album Big Band Bossa Nova
Released 1962

«Soul Bossa Nova» is a popular instrumental, composed and first performed by the musician, impresario and record producer Quincy Jones. It appeared on his 1962 Big Band Bossa Nova album on Mercury Records.

Jones said that it took him twenty minutes to compose the piece, which features prominently a cuíca (responsible for the distinctive «laughing» in the first bars).

Roland Kirk was the flute soloist, Lalo Schifrin was the pianist, Chris White was the bassist, Rudy Collins was the drummer, and Jerome Richardson was the alto flutist. The album liner notes do not specify the brass players.

In 2014 the piece was jointly rewritten by Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Rob Kleiner and Nikki Yanofsky and recorded and released by Niki Yanofsky on her album «Little Secret,» which was produced by Quincy Jones.

This is the third studio album by Canadian singer Nikki Yanofsky. It was released on October 7, 2014. The album charted at #13 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums, and the single «Necessary Evil» charted at #52 on the Canadian Hot 100.
