CAIRO — Upon instituting «Police Day» on Jan. 25 to honor their police force, this week Egyptian authorities opened themselves up to sly mockery at the hands of a professional prankster.
That day also happened to mark the five-year anniversary of the beginning of the social uprising in Tahrir Square against then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Back in 2011, the revolution led to a period of violent conflict between security forces and protesters.
In honor of the day, Egyptian comedian Shady Abu Zaid decided to show his appreciation for Egyptian police officers by handing out balloons to them in Tahrir Square. The balloons were originally condoms.
Abu Zaid and his pals blew up the condoms, and wrote a heartfelt message on each of them: «From the youth of Egypt to the police on January 25th.»
They filmed their display of expert mockery, and the video has since gone viral, racking up over 1.8 million views on Facebook.
Abu Zaid is a correspondent for a popular satirical TV show in Egypt. The show has issued a statement criticizing his act, calling it «insulting and unacceptable.»
