4. Greta Garbo
This Swedish-American actress probably doesn’t ring a bell with many, but that’s okay because I’m here to tell you a little bit about her! She was a highly praised actress and was nominated for three Academy Awards throughout her career and made many movies that people loved. She began working in silent films in the 1920’s and in 1930, she took her first role where she spoke in a movie called Anna Christie. She ended up starring in some movies that didn’t do quite so well, and that’s when her career began to go downhill. She took hit after hit, but then a movie called Two-Faced Woman came around and put her through the ringer due to its failure, and it was then that she decided to call it quits. Greta Garbo retired from the screen after acting in a whopping twenty-eight films at the young age of 35. She then began a private life and passed away on April 15, 1990, at 84.
3. Gene Hackman
Where do I even start with this Hollywood legend? Did you know that Gene, or shall I say, Eugene Allen Hackman, had a film career that stretched across almost five whole decades? That’s right, he first gained fame after portraying Buck Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde in 1967, but by that time he’d already been acting for eleven years, as he’d started in 1956. He didn’t call it quits until 2004, with his last movie being Welcome to Mooseport. That’s an incredibly long career! He won many awards including two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, and one SAG Award! He’s a highly decorated ex-actor, and the film world misses him. Actually, not many seem to have noticed, but people should have because he’s a great actor!
2. Daniel Day-Lewis
This man is pretty much the supreme king of method acting, and even if you don’t know his name, I bet you’ve seen him before. I mean, come on, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln… ringing any bells? Mr. Lewis is an Englishman who also holds Irish citizenship, but he was born and raised in London. Lewis is known for his passion and devotion to his roles and would fairly often remain in character for the entirety of shooting a movie he was working on, even when it negatively affected his health. He is also known for being a very picky and selective actor, with only six movies under his belt since 1998, and at times, he’s taken five years off between projects. He’s a very private person and is extremely protective of his life outside of the movies, and he doesn’t often make public appearances. He has three Best Actor Academy Awards and is one of the most acclaimed actors in the history of film, and that seems to be good enough for him because he announced his retirement in 2017, saying that he was done after Phantom Thread. He’s only 60. He better act again; he’s too good to be done. Do you hear me, Daniel!
1. Macaulay Culkin
Okay, so I’m just going to say this: if you were alive in the 80’s and 90’s, you most definitely know who this kid is, and if you don’t you might want to go see somebody about your memory. I know some of you are Generation Z and weren’t even alive for any of his good movies. Macaulay Culkin had, literally, everyone’s attention not all that long ago. Please tell me you remember Home Alone? Uncle Buck? My Girl? Richie Rich? Where, oh where did the boy who was in it all for a time go then? Well, at a young age he decided to retire, and between 1994 and 2003, he didn’t do any acting. He ended up trying out being a roadie and traversed the country with bands for years. He also has/had his own band called The Pizza Underground. He’s also written a book and could be making a comeback in a movie called Changeland, which should be coming out soon, and I’m excited to see what the grown man Macaulay you see here can still do. I definitely think that young kids in Hollywood should take indefinite retirements and get some life experience in before deciding on whether to keep acting or not. Good call, Macaulay.
