I have wood turned the Telstar 18 which is this year’s World Cup football/soccer ball. It is a segmented sphere with approximately 2013 pieces. It is made mostly of maple with a patterned section of birch, cherry, walnut, and ebony. It is 9″ in diameter and 4lbs 7 oz. It is hollow. I built the segmented form with three intersecting rings; these rings are made up of 12 rectangular pieces and 6 square pieces. Eight triangular pieces fill the space between the rings to complete the sphere. The finish is walnut oil.
