From the creator of F-Zero: The Revenge, another hack I played a while ago, comes another new F-Zero SNES hack! Welcome to F-Zero: Alternate Strike! Another hack I played previously, Formula Zero, used texture hacks in the colors of the cars as well as the environment of Silence, but this hack takes it several steps further still, modifying everything from the text to the color of the course map, and even the environments themselves!
While I did enjoy Roy’s other hack, Alt Strike is an improvement in pretty much every way. As I said, this one goes all out with the texture hacking, but also I feel like the tracks are better designed here as well. In The Revenge, a lot of its difficulty came from just spamming land mines and magnets. Alt Strike instead puts more of its difficulty into the actual designs of the tracks themselves, which is a good thing. Also, with the criss-crossing designs of a lot of The Revenge’s tracks came magnets scattered throughout the track to prevent shortcuts, and it made the tracks look kind of ugly. No need for that in Alt Strike!
This actually isn’t the first version of this hack. In a previous version, some of the tracks felt unfinished, and none of the textures were hacked. Also, another player who played the previous version thought one of the tracks to be impossible with the Fire Stingray. That was not the case, but you had to be perfect on the first lap. That issue was fixed in this version as well. Overall, this is a great hack, and I highly recommend it to anyone.
Also, a side note: this hack breaks Burakki’s record for the longest final track of any hack I’ve played!
