Star Wars | Tragedy to Comedy — Part 1: The Joseph Campbell Perspective

This video explores the themes of tragedy and comedy and why the Star Wars Skywalker saga needs to demonstrate both to be a complete myth. This is part one of two, focusing on Joseph Campbell’s ideas on mythology and the tragic-comic theme found in these types of stories. In part two, I will look at this topic from the screenwriting perspective, drawing on Robert McKee’s landmark book Story.

In previous videos, I’ve talked about how the Star Wars story is progressing in this way. The prequel and original trilogies told the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker, whose soul was saved by his son Luke. The sequel trilogy will complete the myth by showing the divine comedy of redemption of Ben Solo and the end of war and suffering across the galaxy.
