There´s this beautiful word «mercurial» — and he is more than most other actors (Bill Murray is another) the definition of that. There´s something jazzy, liquid, quick-witted, truly electrical about him. He seems to dance through his best movies, not taking himself too seriously, he´s intelligent, even philosophical (in his interviews) without being pretentious. He improvises (jazzy, remember) a lot, and he really always seems as if his dialogue and actions are not written and rehearsed but rather just happen and are captured by the camera.
One of his greatest performances was in the apparently little known James Toback movie (he often worked with him) Two Girls and a Guy. In it he plays an actor-allround-entertainer-everything who loves two women and he is a notorious liar. It´s one of the best movies about narcissism and his performance is mesmerizing, because there´s just such a wide range of emotions and ideas being expressed through his performance (and Heather Graham and Natasha Gregson Wagner, who are also great), for one thing his singing chops, his piano playing (and composition — Jazz!), his Shakespeare (Hamlet) and and and are all on display — not many actors can do all that — and make it seem the most natural thing.
His performance in that is one of the greatest in cinematic history, and no one seems to know it.
He´s also a brilliant comedic actor, on par with bona fide comedians (not to «reduce» them to that) like Bill Murray.
There´s also something «old-fashioned» about him, he seems more like Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson than like his age peers, he is also more like those older actors than any of his peers are like them.
